- Find Someone who cares
One of those songs where I could have written 18 verses of rubbish but whittled it down to 3 lengthy rants about this, that and the other all coming back to the fact that ultimatley everything will be ok once we ‘find someone who cares’. Whether that be a lover, a friend, a relative or even God, love is all that matters in the end.It often seems to me that no one cares about anyone other than themselves which makes a lot of people feel invisible or ignored. We should be listening to each other because it’s really the only way we learn.
- This Life
I originally wrote this song when I was 14 and was always fond of the punky edge it had to it but after recording a demo in early 2008 it got brushed aside as another song I had grown tired of. However, after Jim expressed his liking of it we decided to record it.I completley re-wrote the lyric and we fiddled with the melody lines slightly and ended up with the finished version.
We wanted it to fit in with the songs we already had but still retain it’s original angst and flare which we both felt were vital to the feel of the song.
The lyric touches on what it’s like growing up in society from the perspective of someone who is going through the process. The pressures, the social isolation, the confusion, the temptation, the worries, the wanting to fit in etc…
- We Have the Best Lives
This song focuses on how we are naturally never content with what we have and selfishly always want to squeeze more and more out of our already saturated lifestyles. Ironically the more stuff we seem to have the more we seem to want and a vicious cycle emerges, making a lot of us hollow and unfulfilled. It also touches on how consumerism and our profit-obsessed economy help fuel that cycle.
In truth, a lot of us do have the best lives in the world we just have to learn to enjoy them!
Although, there’s something cynical about human nature whereby ultimately it doesn’t matter how great your life is, you’ll always find a way to hate it. We always seem to focus on the negative side of the coin (me included) when sometimes it’s nice just to focus on what we do have, not what we want.
We were lucky enough to get Josh Phillips from Procal Harem to play piano on this track which really brings it to life.
- Teenagers in Love
Written for a friend whose identity will remain secret! It’s a personal message of realistic advice to a friend who I felt I could relate to quite easily having been through a similar situation myself. Obviously heartbroken teenagers is a universal truth so take from it what you want.
This was the first song we recorded for the E.P and was actually the song that brought Jim and I together in the first place – good times!
- Birthday (live life)
Written on my 15th birthday, it’s a lot happier than the opening few lines suggest. It’s a song of hope and fulfillment in times of sorrow.
Have you ever felt really low and depressed for apsolutley no apparent reason? I felt pretty down on my birthday and I couldn’t seem to make any sense of it – it’s not normally a time to be upset about anything!
The song is really about taking those days and turning them upside down. It’s about not sitting around feeling sorry for yourself and just to live life.
After jotting this song down I got up and took myself down the beach to meet my friends and had a beautiful day. It’s strange how getting your feelings out onto a page can cheer you up.
This was the only song that we recorded the guitar and vocals in the same take – it took some, but I think it worked in the end!
